What is porcelain paving?
Porcelain paving is made by firing a blend of refined clay, sand and minerals at extremely high temperatures. This creates a dense and highly durable material that is scratch resistant and non-porous. As such, porcelain doesn’t stain or damage easily, making it ideal for applications including patios, interior floors and wall cladding. The density and low porosity of porcelain paving also means that it does not need to be sealed and is easier to clean than natural stone paving.
What’s more, as porcelain is manmade, you can expect a more and uniform appearance than natural stone and straight edges for a modern finish. We can also supply matching indoor and outdoor porcelain paving tiles in selected styles to create a seamless look across your kitchen or conservatory and adjoining patio.
FAQs
Why choose porcelain patio slabs?
- Durable and hardwearing: manufactured porcelain slabs are incredibly strong and scratch-resistant. They’re ideal for high-traffic areas and family gardens, and many of our ranges are suitable for driveways too. Just make sure that your chosen slabs have the appropriate load-bearing rating. You’ll also need to follow the correct porcelain laying procedures, which differs slightly to how natural stone is laid (more on this below).
- Low maintenance and easy to clean: due to its extremely low porosity, porcelain paving won’t absorb moisture or stains. This also means that it is weather resistant and won’t crack if temperatures drop. Additionally, porcelain resists algae and moss build-up without the need for sealant and is very easy to care for. Regular sweeping and an occasional washing with mild soapy water or a paving cleaner is sufficient to keep it looking like new.
- Slip-resistant surface: all of the porcelain slabs we supply are designed with textured finishes and high anti-slip ratings. Our outdoor paving has a slip rating of R11 as standard which helps prevent slipping, especially in wet weather. Meanwhile, our indoor styles have a slightly smoother yet reassuring R10 finish. As such, they’re great for areas such as kitchens and entranceways where the floor may get wet temporarily.
What porcelain slab styles are available?
At Love Stone, we stock a range of porcelain paving slabs including authentic designs that mimic real stone, without the associated upkeep. This includes sandstone, quartz and veined marble styles, alongside industrial concrete finishes and eye-catching metallics. With many styles available with the option of a smooth or more rustic riven texture depending on your style and preference.
Colours span from classic grey and beige to bolder black and crisp white, plus browns and greens for subtle hint of colour. Whichever you choose, all slabs are UV resistant, and the colour is baked into the design, so they won’t fade in the sun.
Our outdoor slabs are 20mm thick as standard to ensure good durability in all weathers. And for indoor projects, we offer more streamlined 9mm floor tiles. The most popular porcelain slab sizes include 900x600mm and 1200x600mm, but we can supply other options as needed too. We also offer selected styles in handy paving project packs, containing sufficient slabs to cover a set size of patio.
Additionally, our in-house experts can provide custom cut designs to fit around existing walls or garden features, including curved styles. And if you’d like smooth bullnose edges for steps, raised features or even a swimming pool surround, we can arrange those too. Just ask a member of our team when placing your order.
How do you lay porcelain paving?
Just like natural stone pavers, porcelain patio slabs must be laid on a sub-base with a full mortar bed. However, there is an additional step involved when laying porcelain due to its considerably lower porosity. Each slab must be primed on the underside with a suitable slurry primer to ensure it bonds correctly to the mortar. Otherwise, the slabs may move or lift in time.
Don’t have any primer to hand? We can supply a suitable product alongside your slabs. And if you plan to trim or shape your porcelain paving when you get it home, we stock specialist diamond tipped saw blades too. Our blades make cutting porcelain slabs quickly and neatly a simply process.
Once you’ve laid your porcelain paving, there’s no need to seal the surface to prevent stains or weathering. To finish your porcelain patio, an appropriate resin based jointing compound should be used to fill the paving joints to provide a neat finish and prevent weed growth. We stock ProJoint Titan epoxy jointing compounds in a range of colours, please ask us for samples.
How much does porcelain paving and delivery cost?
Porcelain paving prices vary depending on the style, thickness and country of origin, as well as current exchange rates. Premium styles from Italy and Spain tend to cost more. However, they’re also the best quality, so arguably worth the investment in the long term. Otherwise, we can source more affordable options if you prefer.
